Stretcher and canvas

A paintings progress 010

It’s been raining lately and the backside of this canvas has been saturated with water. It had some affect on the paint but no real damage has occurred and the stretcher is working fine. I want to see how it holds upp and will make no effort to protect this canvas from the elements except from heavy wind. I’m breaking upp the technique introducing some heavier application of paint. Hopefully I will get some usefull textures that can be a fundament for thinner applications of paint.

To tell you the truth stretchers and canvas is not the perfect medium for painting. I prefer wood on a blind frame because it allows for a more brutal apllication of effort. I have to be somewhat more gentle with canvas which I suppose has an effect on the painterly.

I have three paintings on wood at work to the right of this canvas which have been lying flat in all kinds of weather since early May. No warping I’m happy to inform. I’ll be posting them next week if they are agreeable to me.

Yellow

Thick yellow

It became all wintery. Still saturating the canvas to get the right dynamics.

Another hole in the roof.

Another hole

First step repairing. The structural logs that hold the roof were Ok. Only superficial damage at the top of the logs. I’m substituting the poorly timber. Around 16 square meters has to go and I’m worried what I’ll find at the top of the wall just bellow the bottom right hand corner of this picture.  The house has a forgiving nature so it’ll probably be allright I hope knock on wood and what have you.

Bark

Bark

What a mess! Ancient bark that was used as an underroof/insulation.

Layers and layers

A paintings progress 008

I’m guessing that when I get to a hundred layers I’ll be happy with this.

Adding layers

A painitngs progress 007

I am adding layers to establish a subtile complexity to the surface. The landscape motive is established and the technique likewise. I am using the technique established in Blueslipp which you can find at http://www.cskagen.no/Arkiv/Fortetninger/Maleri_Blueslipp.htm.

I am looking for a minimal composition with a painterly complexity.

It’s great to feel that earlier work makes it possible to know where I’m going with this one. Experience or what have you:) Point beeing that this is not an exploratory focused work.
